Studio pottery from Brighton
I make elegant mugs for tea and coffee that are durable, dishwasher safe and made with locally dug materials where possible. I throw them on the potter's wheel in my studio in Brighton, UK, the shape inspired by my Gran’s preference for drinking from a ‘proper’ teacup.
I contrast my teacup shapes with glazes which vary across the piece, tweaking the glaze chemistry to encourage individuality. I leave dimples and fingerprints as a reminder of the process of making, and sculpt the handles in different sizes for a personal tactile connection.
When I can I’ll use alternative firing techniques such as wood and soda, experimenting with the aesthetic of the strict Victorian form contrasted with the elemental and sometimes chaotic glaze effects of atmospheric firing.
