Half glazed celadon mug, wood fired
A wheel-thrown mug in light clay, wood-fired at the Oxford University anagama kiln.
I had the opportunity to do two wood firings at this location, in a kiln made by artists from Bizen, China. I used traditional chinese glazes - this one with a simple celadon inside and halfway down the outside. Ash from the open fire hits the piece, and has made it’s own glazed effects on the remaining bottom half - and made some beautiful crackling effects in the celadon.
The firing took 5 days, throwing wood into the firepit every 5-8 minutes. The experience was amazing, a community effort where you’re camping beside the kiln and working in shifts.
