In 2018 we moved out of London, and I had to decide whether to set up my own studio in Brighton. It seemed like a big commitment, paying rent on my own private space and kitting it out with all the equipment. I was lucky to find Coachwerks. Turning Earth had generously given me the recipe of two of the glazes that I used most, so I jumped in to the world of glaze making. I felt pretty alone in this, it was a bit of a scary challenge, and my first trials weren't very successful!
In January 2019, I took a 5 day glaze course with Kyra Cane at West Dean College of Art and Conservation to troubleshoot my issues. I am a big fan of her surfaces - matte white porcelain with subtle blue-black brushwork, and just the right amount of movement in the glaze to shift the lines slightly. The course mostly covers experimenting with colourants within bought transparent base glazes, but she helped me rework the recipe to test why my green glaze wasn't very green. I fired a gas kiln for the first time too, constantly tweaking the pressure and monitoring the temperature - learning the importance of cones to show the heat work.
